The summer of culture in Sv. Filip i Jakov with various happenings
The apostles St. Phillip (Sv. Filip) and Jacob (Jakov)
The town was named after the apostles St. Phillip and St. Jacob, who
are celebrated on 3 May.
According to the data from John’s Gospel, Saint Phillip
came from Betsaida near the lake of Genezaret. He was a friend of John
the apostle and evangelist, with whom he was part of the scholar circle
of John the Baptist. According to the later tradition, Phillip lived
with his three daughters in Hierapolis in Asia Minor, where he died
as well. Archaeologists believe to have found his grave there. The relics
of St. Phillip are kept in the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles in Rome. Saint Jacob junior, son of Alfej, is the writer of
one document from the New Testament. Apart from the list of the apostles,
his name is not particularly mentioned in the Gospels. He is remembered
as one of the most prominent figures of the early Church and as the
bishop of Jerusalem.
